Origin of Jivamukti Yoga
Jivamukti Yoga was developed by Sharon Gannon and David Life in New York in 1984. Sharon was a dancer and musician while David was running café business and was an artist. Both met in 1982 and traveled together to India to get yoga teacher training in India under the guidance of Sivananda and Swami Nirmalananda. When they returned to New York, they set up a Jivamukti Yoga Society which was its kind of first in the city. In 1990, they again flew to India to get Ashtanga Yoga teacher training with PattabhiJois.
Jivamukti is derived from Jivamukti, a Sanskrit word. Jiva means individual living soul, and mukti means liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth. It is developed as a form to get liberation while living.
