The series of poses that focuses on the physical alignment of the body it is called as Iyengar Yoga. Research has proved that Iyengar Yoga improves strength, flexibility, and greater peace of mind. Origin of Iyengar yoga

B.K.S. Iyengar invented the Iyengar yoga in India. He was one of the renowned yoga teachers in the world. Krishnamacharya who was the Father of Modern Yoga was the teacher of Iyengar. As a child, he had been suffering from health problems which he cured through his asana practice. Thus, he developed Iyengar Yoga and improved it in a way that people of all ages and people with disabilities can also perform.  He started teaching yoga in 1936. He came to limelight after many American and European students come here to learn yoga. He also established Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute named after his wife in Pune, India.

 

Aim of Iyengar Yoga

There are many ways in which Iyengar Yoga is different other than all the yoga types practiced all over the world. It uses props which no yoga gurus have advised or recommended which helped everyone to practice it correctly.  The aim of Iyengar yoga is to cure the mental distress and to improve health and flexibility.

 

Physical, mental & spiritual benefits of Iyengar yoga practice

Iyengar Yoga emphasis on flexibility, balance, concentration and improving stamina and is based on the principles of Ashtanga Yoga. There are many yoga school in India that offering the Iyengar yoga classes and some other as well.  Meditation is intertwined with the poses.

The first principle Yama helps the body to refrain from materialistic desires and resisting cravings. It also emphasizes non-violence. 

Niyama, the second principle cleanse the body and get away with stress due to unfulfilled desires.

Pranayama, the fourth one emphasizes slow and deep breathing.

There are two other principles- Pratyahara and Dhyana- which emphasizing on the calmness of mind and achieving the unity have been incorporated into Iyengar Yoga.

There are a number of poses that are found in the other types of yoga as well, but the proper alignment of the asanas is important. It does not focus on cardiovascular workout but needless to say, its practitioner will improve their strength and flexibility through effective meditation and breathing techniques.
