Who is Maharishi Mahesh Yogi?

 

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was born on 12 January 1917 in Jabalpur, British India into a Kayastha family. He was born with name Mahesh Prasad Varma. Mahesh studied Physics at Allahabad University and completed his degree course in 1942. There are disputes about the work he had done; one says he worked at Gun Carriage Factory in Jabalpur while others say he became an administrative secretary to Swami BrahmanandaSaraswati who was the Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math. His association with Swami BrahmanandaSaraswati continued till 1953 when the latter died. After this, he moved Himalaya region of Uttarkashi in Uttrakhand. He could not be the spiritual successor of Shankaracharya’s despite he was a close disciple of Saraswati because he does not belong to Brahmin caste. Saraswati gave Mahesh the responsibility of teaching meditation to the masses and travel the world to spread the teachings.

Mahesh left Uttarkashi and started teaching traditional meditation technique publicly which he learned from his master BrahmanandaSaraswati. This gave him the much-needed fame, and he was honored with the title of ‘Maharishi’ (great sage). He traveled across India to interact with his Hindu audiences in an Indian context. On his visit to Madras, he spoke in English rather than Hindi just to avoid the resistance because of the language barrier.

When the Beatles visited his Ashram, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi become famous as the guru to the Beatles. The beach boys and some other celebrities followed his learnings. Natural Law Party was founded in 1992 which ran different campaigns in many countries. He left India and shifted to a region called Vlodrop in the Netherlands in 1992. He created a non-profit organization named Global Country of World Peace in 2000. He took retirement from all administrative activities in 2008.

According to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, he has taught more than five million people and trained more than  40,000 Transcendental Meditation teachers. He also established many colleges, teaching centers, and schools and universities

 

About Beatles Band / What has brought them to Rishikesh to Immerse themselves in the path of Yoga?

 

 

Beatles is a popular English rock band based out of Liverpool that rose to fame in the 1960s. There were four members in the band John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. The four of them along with their wives arrived at Rishikesh for meditation in the year of 1968. They choose Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Ashram to learn transcendental meditation. Before Beatles took their long flight, they had met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi earlier in London in 1967. The Maharishi was attending the seminar at Wales, Beatles also came to attend the seminar. The Beatles were attracted with the teachings and meditation of Maharishi Yogi. Mahesh Yogi ask if they want to learn more in their ashram in Rishikesh and invited them.

The Beatles accepted the invitation and came to Rishikesh along with their family, reporters and support staff. Their only purpose of coming to India was to get advanced learning about the Transcendental Meditation. At that time, the Beatles witnessed a meteoric rise, so Maharishi Mahesh Yogi himself conducted the sessions at his ashram.  Many people believe that the Beatles had a fantastic time and were productive during their stay at ashram. Media covered their stay extensively and reported widely.

They got impressed with the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and accepted him as their Guru, and became their disciples. The Beatles were the center of media attraction during that era, and these things keep on irritating the music band, and they started feeling stressed. Though the Beatles have not told anyone about it, some people believe the former theory. It was reported that there were some disputes within the group and their relations were affected. One of the singers George Harrison had also arranged a music concert for the benefit of Natural law party which was affiliated with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

This meditation tour of Rishikesh proved to be a milestone for them and gave them a new vision for their life. The Beatles band was able to maintain good thoughts which were possible because of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Rishikesh was already established as a yoga city throughout India, but the Beatles tour gave Rishikesh international fame. Rishikesh is now one of the popular destinations for the international tourists. Not only the Rishikesh city but the Indian spirituality rose to prominence and changed the perception of the western world. Rishikesh is now the Yoga Capital of the World. The city has some yoga ashrams and yoga gurus who are continuously helping the people who are looking to live their life peacefully. After the death of Maharishi Mahesh Yoga, the ashram is shut down, but the Uttrakhand Government has established it as the Beatles Ashram which is now a tourist destination.

 

About the beauty of  Beatles Ashram Rishikesh?

 

 

The Beatles Ashram was taken over by the Indian Government in the early 2000s. Maharishi left the ashram and moved to Europe where he died. In 2015, the ashram was reopened to draw tourists here. There is a Beatles Cathedral Gallery in the open-air building which was filled with the artist’s collections and quotes from their songs.

The main attraction of the ashram is the Beatles Cathedral which was once a large lecture space but now showcases the excellent graphic art. The ashram was left abandoned between 1997 to 2014 until a group of artists painted the murals of the band members and the lyrics of their songs on the walls. During this time too, the tourists fly here with little supervision. The ashram is a part of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve that’s why a wall has been constructed to keep the animals aside.
