The History of Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga was developed from the Yin and Yang concepts which are rooted in the Chinese culture of Taoism. Yin and Yang are two forces that are diametrically opposed to each other but are interdependent; Yin is related to stillness, night, and passivity while Yang is related to movement, day, and activity, and are basic principles in Chinese philosophy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and spirituality. This balance of opposites is ensuring order in the universe and also in our physical framework.

In Taoist tradition Yin Yoga is linked to yin or the passive or the feminine energy that is linked to stillness and passiveness. The ancient Taoists have learned that if one stretches his muscles for a long time and makes slow movements, then the stagnated energy can be released and one’s health improves. These have later developed into the physical exercise commonly referred to as yoga and were the backbone of Yin Yoga.

Besides this practice, the energy circulation is also passed through the meridians which are associated with the organs and emotions by the TCM. Unlike today’s famous styles like Vinyasa and Ashtanga, Yin Yoga is perfect for toning muscles. It assists practitioners to release their fascia and mind and is therefore appropriate for our Yang paradigm lifestyles. Today, Yin Yoga is practiced all over the world to maintain balance, flexibility and to heal the inner self. As will be seen it has principles that are still as valid today as they were thousands of years ago.

Benefits of Yin Yoga

Improved Joint Flexibility: Yin Yoga also helps to hydrate the connective tissues and increase their flexibility in order to alleviate stiffness.

Enhanced Energy Flow: Because of the prolonged stimulation of the energy meridians, chi or the life force energy is balanced and brings about better vigor and emotional health.

Stress Relief: Yin Yoga slows down the heart rate and reduces stress levels since it works on the parasympathetic nervous system.

Emotional Healing: Laying down in a Yin Yoga pose frees the emotions and helps to gain mental strength and clarity thanks to the ability to remain still.

Better Sleep Quality: Yin Yoga practice makes the body and mind to be more relaxed and when the practice is done constantly, the sleep of practitioners is restored.

Mindfulness and Self-Awareness: Sustaining postures for these periods increases concentration and focuses on the body and mind and the surrounding environment.

Each time you practice asana or pranayama, your capacity to control your focus, breath, and body increases. Likewise, as you dive deeper into the yoga philosophy, you will find yourself eating, sleeping, and thinking like a yogi! And when it comes to eating, diet certainly plays a significant role. Food is an important element and life-giving energy to the human body. The quality and type of food impact our physical, as well as mental well-being.

Let’s see nutrition from the yogic perspective. It includes much more than just the nutritional content of the food. As a full-fledged yogic practice demands a proper supplementation of the body with nutrients, the energetic aspect of nutrition should also be taken into consideration.

Meat or no meat?
The dilemma Many yogis face this question. As you may have heard already, many yoga practitioners start to feel that they don’t feel right anymore to consume non-vegetarian food.

What is the correct yogic diet (Sattvic Diet)?
Have you ever observed the impact of the food intake on your yoga practice? Some foods can wreck the harmony in ourselves as some certain foods creating bloating or digestion disorders. On the other hand, there are also some foods that are more subtle and suitable to the body and mind.

The concept of Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, enlightens us on the impact of different foods on our overall physical, spiritual, and mental well-being. As per Ayurveda, “Sattva” denotes purity in quality of self-control and spiritual well-being as apparent in the form of intelligence, virtue, awareness, and happiness. Thus foods that are sattvic, promote purity in terms of both mind and body. They help nurture the mind – one that is clear, filled with compassion and keeps calm.

Following Sattvic diet
The good news for yogis is that Sattvic foods are absolutely vegetarian! Thus no animals are harmed in the making of such foods as they do not contain any animal products. These foods should be naturally cultivated and should not include any harmful preservatives, additive substances or artificial flavors.

What is Sattvic diet consist of?
Sattvic diet generally includes:

  • Fresh, organically grown fruits and vegetables
  • Nuts and whole grains
  • Dairy – based foods example ghee (clarified butter) and milk
  • Lentils
  • Beans
  • Oils that are plant-based
  • Foods with mild sweetness containing natural and unrefined sugars
  • Spices such as turmeric, ginger, coriander, basil and cinnamon
How is Sattvic diet beneficial? A sattvic diet aids in sharpening your intellect. According to the Bhagavad-Gita, the sattvic diet is said to be light and easy–to–digest. Being enriched with prana or purity, it fosters positive thoughts and satisfaction of the mind. Following such a diet can keep you alert, refreshed and peaceful.

With the background of Hinduism and the daily practice of rituals, she created an early connection to the spiritual side of life. At her young age, she joined her first yoga practice thanks to the good influences of her surroundings. First, she realized the energy of yoga before going deep into the physical and mental aspects, she gained numerous strength in the beginning as a yoga practitionair. After practicing enormous amounts of hours everyday to master the body, mind, and soul, she started her teaching journey in Rishikesh. She completed her reiki master course as she understood the importance of healing and thus offering her healing ability and skills to reduce the sufferings from others, trying to make as many life as possible to give happiness and fruitful life. She completed her graduation in psychology, and got certified as a yoga teacher by Yoga Alliance, Ministry of AYUSH, and GOVT of India. For several months, she worked closely with her students and developed a good understanding of the balance within herself and the others. Because of the booming of yoga in the whole world, she quickly realized in which areas of the body, mind, and soul of the world suffer. That’s why she believes it’s essential that the knowledge of yoga is shared beyond borders, nations, and backgrounds.

Yogi Tanmay

His story with yoga began early—watching his father practice with sages and live by the quiet strength of Karma Yoga. Those moments were planting seeds in him. Years later, during the stillness of the pandemic, something awakened. He felt a strong pull inward and chose to follow that call. He enrolled in a Bachelor’s in Yoga Science at the University of Patanjali. For three years, he dove deep into asana, philosophy, and discipline—and something inside him transformed but his curiosity didn't end there. That led me to the Himalayas, where he studied Yoga Therapy. There, he saw how traditional yogic wisdom could meet modern medicine in beautiful, meaningful ways.

He traveled to Tuscany to learn Yin & Yang Yoga—experiencing the power of stillness and flow. He also explored Sound Healing and other subtle therapies, discovering how vibration and energy can shift the body and mind in profound ways. Yoga has been his path of remembering—of coming home to himself. And as he stands here today, he says he feels honoured to share that journey with all of you.
